Keeping it REL with GypsyPrince
Greetings Masochistic Heathens!
What is it that makes ReBBL so special? It’s huge, yeah.. it is incredibly well run..no question. It’s the community that does it for me. The fact that so many choose to give so much of themselves for us to be able to become immersed in this crazy, evil, infuriating game we all are hooked on.There are so many things going on, even after being here a year, something will come up in conversation and I’m forced to say “wow, we have that too?” Today I get to find out a little more about one of the hardest working (and under appreciated) creators around, steward of a whole online newspaper.. devoted to us.. Gypsy Prince!!
First off, the whole idea behind this is to get to know the people we are playing with so on that note: tell me as much about yourself as you are comfortable sharing! Hobbies, career, relationships, where you have lived- whatever!
Gypsy Prince: Being a Minnesota Native that moved to Chicago 2 years ago, I’ve focused mostly on data analytics work for the past 7 years. ReBBL has been an outlet to work on personal data and website projects. My wife and I had our first child in March, Blood Bowl has since taken a bit of a back seat to those responsibilities, along with some of my Admin duties. Metal is a family man, so he totally encouraged focusing on my new family over ReBBL. Over the coming months, I will be fully rejoining the community.
Pineapple on pizza? Yes or no
And if no how are you currently treating your obvious psychosis?
GP: I do not like pineapple, and never liked pineapple flavored things. That said, pineapple on pizza is actually really good. The sweetness it adds to the acidity of the sauce is a huge thumbs up in my book.
How did you find Blood Bowl and ReBBl respectively?
GP: I was playing Blood Bowl on XBOX shortly after moving to Chicago to keep up with one of my friends. After a 9 game season there, I was hungry for more. Having owned Blood Bowl for PC, I found the ReBBL community on the main Blood Bowl sub-Reddit. Looking for a community, ReBBL filled the social void.
Who do you admire in ReBBL? For Blood Bowl or for anything..and why?
GP: The community is very active and diverse. The progress ReBBL has in terms of technology blows away any other league. Working on the Admin team and the global discussion and interaction is also great. The memes on the Admin side are also super on point.
If you could boil your thoughts on Blood Bowl to one concise bit of advice what would it be?
GP: Learn to lose, learn to grow. Being a pretty terrible coach, I’ve lost quite a bit more than I’ve won. League play is more about the long game and the community, rather than just winning championships. There is only one champion per season, and the gauntlet to get there with so many coaches is special. I do not expect to reach that height.
ReBBL News is an amazing production. How did it come to be? Is journalism a passion?
GP: The news group appealed to me because I really wanted API access to the Blood Bowl data. I started taking on a writing role with the “REL Round Up” in order to be worthy of getting an API key. Shortly after I became the main editor for the magazine because I started finding ways to optimize and make the process easier and faster. Sustaining 20 hours a week to make a magazine wasn’t going to work and the magazine was basically using HTML and CSS formatting to produce, so it made sense to just build a website. Around the same time I was learning to use Python for data analysis, so it made sense to use ReBBL News as a testing ground for improving my skills. Once the website went live, Metal asked me if I would like to be an Admin. So now there are admin duties and trying to make sure that the news groups produces quality content and to encourage more community involvement. I still haven’t really used my API key to do any of the things I had planned, MajorByte is just too good and beats me to everything. My goal is to make tools that make writing, recapping, and streaming easier so that more folks participate in building the community.
I would say he is successful, but I’m biased! Thank you Gypsy Prince for taking time and giving us a peek!
Next up on tap, what does it take to hang in one of the toughest divisions in ReBBL for several season, and do so undefeated..with elves, in a stormy sea of Mighty Blow and Tackle.. I have no freaking clue! But I’m gonna find out and share with you..maybe;) The Duke himself: Arch next week!
Until next time! Thanks for reading!
