Amazons are in interesting team in terms of design, but decidedly less fun to play against. They have an extremely efficient team at low TVs, but fall off an absolute cliff like few teams do once development starts.

The reasons this happens are pretty straight-forward. Dodge spam is dominating against teams without tackle, but cripplingly over-specialized without AGI 4 to accomany it. Combine that with a lackluster stat-line and and not much to spend your money on once developed, and you have a pretty hard sell in higher TV ranges. Making the 'Zons a little less obnoxious at early TV, but a little better later on, is the obvious goal to shoot for. The main catch is that we want to do it without changing the stat-line or removing that dodge. After all, those are the things that define the team!

The Roster

No.  Name MV ST AG AV Skills N(D) Cost
0-16 Linewoman 6 3 3 7 Dodge G(APS) 50K
0-4 Thrower 6 3 3 7 Dodge, Pass, Juggernaut GP(AS) 90K
0-4 Catcher 6 3 3 7 Dodge, Catch, Sure Feet GA(PS) 80K
0-2 Blitzer 6 3 3 7 Dodge, Block, Dauntless GS(AP) 100K
0-1 Priestess Tiger 6 5 2 8 Loner, No Hands, Wild Animal, Grab, Claw, Shadowing S(GAP) 150K

50K Rerolls

We have changed literally everything other than the Linewoman, so lets start from the top. The Thrower and Catcher have both moved from 0-2 positionals to 0-4, which should hopefully be enough to encourage a more robust ball game for the Amazons. The Thrower herself now has Juggernaut for an extra 20K to her cost, definiely an odd skill choice, but one that helps her scare opponents off of the sideline and suggests an alternate use for her when you don't really need a 3rd or 4th dedicated thrower.

Next is the Catcher who has recieved a budget +MV in Sure Feet for a meer 10K added to her cost. This version of the Catcher has a bit of an easier time scoring compared to the old one and should put further emphasis onto Amazons as more of a ball-running team.

Next up is Blitzers. These ladies are easily the most offensive players on the team with built-in blodge, so we've increased her cost and reduced her rostered slots from 0-4 to 0-2, but as a tradeoff we've also given her Dauntless in the hopes that it'll help her fair a little better against developed high strength teams.

Last of all we have the mandetory Big Guy Addition to the team! Normally I try to make from-scratch Big Guys sub-optimal, good enough for the Huge Jackedman or for fridge builds, but not especially practical on optimized teams. in this case though? The Priestess Tiger serves an important role for a developed team. Its high cost, low armour and sub-optimal starting skills all make for a Big Guy that isn't that great on a rookie team, but with a couple of levels it grows into some much needed strength for a team that otherwise struggles with it, and strength attached to claws at that.

Not So Budget

I have a tendency to increase player costs when I modify teams and this one is no exeption. I like adding more skills, more positionals and more diverse stat lines, all of which translates into extra players. When I do this I'm usually careful to make sure the team can make a decent starting roster, but other than that I don't tend to worry about it too much.

In this case though? Things are a little different. One of the reasons Amazons are a pain to play against at low TV is because they are so price efficient. In the base team you can buy 3 rerolls, an apo and every single positional for less than 1000TV and you can get a healthy-sized bench if you shave off the apo or a couple of the positionals. One of the ways this roster attempts to address Amazon's strong early game is by making it cost more. This team gets 2 blitzers, 2 catchers and a thrower with the apo and reroll, then it has enough leftover for either one more catcher or thrower and a 12th linewoman. That's 2 fewer positionals at 1000TV and for that matter only 50% as much block. That could make all the difference for a rookie team struggling to score.

Wrapping Things Up

Have we made the team better overall? Have we just made them bloaty? I'm honestly not sure. A more level-handed approach might be to make the blitzer change without the others and then revise their Star Player roster for handling higher TVs, but this solution was at least an exciting one.

Without a doubt Amazons are one of the hardest teams in the game to change in this way, short of completely rebuilding them from the ground up. Even coming up with a Big Guy was tricky given the team's relative lack of lore! Whether you think I landed on target or not, hopefully the result was at least entertaining to watch.
